The Farm Bill really ought to be called the Food Bill, because it sets the federal government’s plan of action and funding for our food system for 5 years at a shot. So if you want more money for beginning farmers and ranchers (like our vets), or more help for farmers to convert to organic practices, or for folks to be able to shop for fresh veggies at the farmers market with their food stamps (to name just a few issues), the Farm Bill sets that policy.

For years, it’s been held hostage by Big Ag — the multinational corporations growing GMO corn, soy, hogs, etc. With all those senators in the Midwest, they keep those subsidies going to their near and dear.

The food activists in this country are trying to get some of our food system back in the hands of more small to mid-size regional farmers (again, think of our vets who are starting up enterprises). So paying attention to the Farm Bill, and making a call or sending a letter now and then, is more important than you might imagine.
