From our friends at Foodtank.org (the food think tank) this news:  The United Nations recently declared 2014 as the International Year of Family Farming (IYFF). This the first United Nations year that is the result of a campaign by civil society--the World Rural Forum (WRF) campaigned heavily for the year and it was backed by more than 360 civil and farmers’ organizations in five continents. According to the FAO: The International Year of Family Farming honors over 400 million family farms in both developed and developing countries, defined as farms that rely primarily on family members for labour and management. Such farms [...]

Want “safe” food?

2013-11-05T21:23:26+00:00

Everyone wants clean safe food. That's a given.  So when you hear the USDA promoting the "Food Safety Modernization Act," you likely think ... "good, the government is improving things."   Think again.  The new rules of the game have been drafted to suit Big Ag and will likely make it super difficult and expensive to farm organically or sustainably, on a smaller lever. Ground Operations joins with FarmAid and the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition to urge the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) & USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) to make changes to the proposed rules under the Food Safety Modernizatoin Act [...]

$22 Million for Healthy Food Financing Initiative

2013-10-18T23:14:15+00:00

Wow - what surprising good news just landed in the "In Box", from the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition.  A sweet $22 million has been made available to increase healthy food in low to moderate-income under-served communities - rural, urban and suburban (... that's everyone, right?) through the creation and expansion of healthy food retail outlets like grocery stores, farmers markets and co-ops. And get this - it also applies to food hubs -- for packaging and distribution, so essential to local food.  $22 million isn't really so much, but it's surprising how helpful $25,00 - $250,000 can be to a local [...]

A Simple Fix for Farming

2013-10-07T14:02:25+00:00

Tired of the same old David & Goliath debate of organic vs. "conventional" food production? What about a simple premise of MUCH less chemical use and the same bottom line?   In honor of October as Food Month, I thought I'd share an article Mark Bittman wrote this time last year for the New York Times. Read on .... "It's becoming clear that we can grow all the food we need, and profitably, with far fewer chemicals. And I’m not talking about imposing some utopian vision of small organic farms on the world. Conventional agriculture can shed much of its chemical use [...]

Kentucky Proud is what they call themselves. The Growing Warrior Project is a partnership that includes veterans, civilians and organizations. The intention is to bring these partners together to work as one as a driving force to help develop a local reliable food system.  They have developed their own food label in Kentucky, Homegrown Heroes.  They have developed a multi-farm CSA called Acres of Harvest, an on-line food hub and buying club, that is a group of small family farms adhering to Certified Naturally Grown Principles, which insure that the soil is enriched each season, pesticide regulations are more stringent than even Certified [...]

Meet Phil Northcutt, formerly a Marine with two tours in Iraq.  First tour he was in the worst position possible -- riding in full view as a Turret Gunner in armored vehicles; his second tour was spent as House Arresting Officer in the sweeps of insurgent homes.  So you can imagine how welcoming the bleet of goats and nicker of horses are at Northcutt Ranch, after the tumultuous sounds of war. Help us get this message to other veterans by contributing to our campaign!

Ground Operations Film Clip: The Veteran’s Farm

2013-05-11T04:54:42+00:00

The Veteran's Farm from Dulanie Ellis on Vimeo. Meet Adam Burke and Pat Sanders from the Veterans Farm in Florida. The irony about Adam is that as a third generation blueberry farmer, he joined the Army to get away from the farm! After being severely wounded in Iraq, he returned to the family farm to recover and found that the very work of farming actually accelerated his cognitive and physical repair! That got him thinking, "if this is working for me, why not for other guys." Two years later, the Veterans Farm was born. Adam just recently received the Presidential Civilian [...]
