Farmer-Veteran Internship at Oklahoma Farm

2014-01-04T02:02:33+00:00

Ground Operations isn't really a job posting board, but this came in and it seems like I ought to put it out there ….  Bootstrap Farm in Yale, Oklahoma is looking for a full-time intern for 2014 that could turn into a Farm Manager job - and they contacted us because they are keen on a veteran getting the job! It's a paid job on a 10-acre CSA with crops and heritage turkeys. They're offering a monthly stipend, with housing and plenty to eat.  If you're interested, check out the job description below -- it's VERY complete about what they're looking [...]

Want “safe” food?

2013-11-05T21:23:26+00:00

Everyone wants clean safe food. That's a given.  So when you hear the USDA promoting the "Food Safety Modernization Act," you likely think ... "good, the government is improving things."   Think again.  The new rules of the game have been drafted to suit Big Ag and will likely make it super difficult and expensive to farm organically or sustainably, on a smaller lever. Ground Operations joins with FarmAid and the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition to urge the FDA (Food & Drug Administration) & USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) to make changes to the proposed rules under the Food Safety Modernizatoin Act [...]

Drift Catchers – Not Ocean Fish, but Pesticides

2013-10-22T16:00:04+00:00

The farmer-veterans in "Ground Operations" have chosen to grow organically (whether certified or not) they resist using the chemical approach to farming for several reasons.  Many have been exposed to chemicals in the war that have left them with damaging health effects, some just don't want to support the use of fossil-fuel based inputs that require us to go to war to get them. But what do you do when your neighbors are using them?  And not just a spray can, but airplanes laying down blankets of mist over acres or miles of crops? Ask Laura Krouse, an organic grower in [...]

$22 Million for Healthy Food Financing Initiative

2013-10-18T23:14:15+00:00

Wow - what surprising good news just landed in the "In Box", from the National Sustainable Agriculture Coalition.  A sweet $22 million has been made available to increase healthy food in low to moderate-income under-served communities - rural, urban and suburban (... that's everyone, right?) through the creation and expansion of healthy food retail outlets like grocery stores, farmers markets and co-ops. And get this - it also applies to food hubs -- for packaging and distribution, so essential to local food.  $22 million isn't really so much, but it's surprising how helpful $25,00 - $250,000 can be to a local [...]

A Simple Fix for Farming

2013-10-07T14:02:25+00:00

Tired of the same old David & Goliath debate of organic vs. "conventional" food production? What about a simple premise of MUCH less chemical use and the same bottom line?   In honor of October as Food Month, I thought I'd share an article Mark Bittman wrote this time last year for the New York Times. Read on .... "It's becoming clear that we can grow all the food we need, and profitably, with far fewer chemicals. And I’m not talking about imposing some utopian vision of small organic farms on the world. Conventional agriculture can shed much of its chemical use [...]

Rooftop Farms – Veteran Job Opportunities

2013-08-27T20:54:18+00:00

From Grist.org:  "....Five years ago, there were no rooftop farms in North America, says Steven Peck, president of the Toronto-based nonprofit Green Roofs for Healthy Cities. (Gardens, sure, but nothing producing food on a commercial scale.) Today, he estimates there are 20. Five years from now, there will be more than 100, he says, and numbers will continue to soar. “This is just the tip of the iceberg,” Peck says. “Rooftop farming is under consideration in every major city in America.” "Mandel says rooftop farms now supply food for restaurants and grocery stores, and serve as CSAs, selling shares to the local [...]

Monsanto Gives a “World Food Prize”… to itself!

2013-07-02T15:22:40+00:00

How typical.  The same company that tells you to believe genetically engineered food is healthy because THEY say it's healthy, has now sponsored a World Food Prize that's been given to... guess who?  Their own Robert Fraley, Exec.VP & Chief Technology Officer. Journalist Mark Bittman ("on food and all things related") from the New York Times makes a grand case for a "Food Sovereignty Prize" to showcase the many people around the world who are actually working to create a sustainable and fair food system. (We could nominate some of our farmer-veterans in "Ground Operations"!) Zeyaur Khan, a plant pathologist  in [...]

Veteran Organic Farming Program

2013-05-19T16:07:24+00:00

Wow - what a find in Pennsylvania! Delaware Valley College is working in collaboration with the Rodale Institute (the origin of the organic farming movement in the U.S.) to offer a 36-credit certificate program in organic farming to veterans. The one-year program will incorporate classroom courses on animal science, marketing, plants disease diagnosis and entomology during the school year and then students will take hands-on experience at the Rodale farm -- and that is one fantastic farm, I can tell you from having seen it.  Made me want to go intern there myself and forget filmmaking!! DelVal (college) is proud to [...]

Ground Operations: Battlefields to Farmfields' goal is to strengthen the growing network of combat veterans who are transitioning to civilian life with new careers in sustainable agriculture. We are connecting people with resources, so that veterans can create healthy new lives for themselves and food security for communities across America. We have  begun our national campaign in California. Ground Operations creates engaging events with scrumptuous seasonal food, a local farmer-veteran telling their story, the film screening and a conversation with the audience. The energy in the room is electric! Grown men cry, rousing standing ovations ensue, and ideas are flying round the room.  It's [...]

Vertical Urban Farm in Chicago

2013-05-15T05:30:21+00:00

Archi's Acres (featured in "Ground Operations") has been teaching organic hydroponic gardening for several years already, training veterans in sustainable agriculture. But now it's finally taking off in the mainstream as well, as evidenced by this article about a large vertical farm in Chicago.  We need these in cities all over the country. Let's train vets to do the job! Read more: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/22/farmedhere-nations-largest-vertical-farm_n_2933739.html
