Drift Catchers – Not Ocean Fish, but Pesticides

2013-10-22T16:00:04+00:00

The farmer-veterans in "Ground Operations" have chosen to grow organically (whether certified or not) they resist using the chemical approach to farming for several reasons.  Many have been exposed to chemicals in the war that have left them with damaging health effects, some just don't want to support the use of fossil-fuel based inputs that require us to go to war to get them. But what do you do when your neighbors are using them?  And not just a spray can, but airplanes laying down blankets of mist over acres or miles of crops? Ask Laura Krouse, an organic grower in [...]

Urban Ag gets a Boost – So Does Farmer-Veteran

2013-10-03T16:46:58+00:00

So I'm reading the L.A. Times this morning, thrilled to read about our new CA tax law allowing urban property owners to reduce the assessed value of their land (read lower taxes) if they will commit it to urban agriculture for 5 years.  And I think wow, I've got to tell D'Artagnan, one of the veterans in "Ground Operations" who's doing urban Ag in L.A. -- and by golly, there he is being quoted in the next two paragraphs!! D'Artagnan Scorza is a force of nature, inciting his food-scarce community to take up rakes and shovels, and build their own food [...]

Growing Warriors – New Group, New Film Screening

2013-07-24T17:13:48+00:00

Kentucky Proud is what they call themselves. The Growing Warrior Project is a partnership that includes veterans, civilians and organizations. The intention is to bring these partners together to work as one as a driving force to help develop a local reliable food system.  They have developed their own food label in Kentucky, Homegrown Heroes.  They have developed a multi-farm CSA called Acres of Harvest, an on-line food hub and buying club, that is a group of small family farms adhering to Certified Naturally Grown Principles, which insure that the soil is enriched each season, pesticide regulations are more stringent than even Certified [...]

Matthew Gilliard saw the Berlin Wall come down in the Army. Althea Gilliard was a Navy M.P. at Guantanamo before finishing two degrees in Forensic Psychology.  Now they are returning to the family farm, organic since the days of the Civil War, and now one of only two African-American farms listed in the Georgia Centennial Family Farm register.

Ground Operations Film Clip: The Veteran’s Farm

2013-05-11T04:54:42+00:00

The Veteran's Farm from Dulanie Ellis on Vimeo. Meet Adam Burke and Pat Sanders from the Veterans Farm in Florida. The irony about Adam is that as a third generation blueberry farmer, he joined the Army to get away from the farm! After being severely wounded in Iraq, he returned to the family farm to recover and found that the very work of farming actually accelerated his cognitive and physical repair! That got him thinking, "if this is working for me, why not for other guys." Two years later, the Veterans Farm was born. Adam just recently received the Presidential Civilian [...]

Ground Operations: Battlefields to Farmfields' goal is to strengthen the growing network of combat veterans who are transitioning to civilian life with new careers in sustainable agriculture. We are connecting people with resources, so that veterans can create healthy new lives for themselves and food security for communities across America. We have  begun our national campaign in California. Ground Operations creates engaging events with scrumptuous seasonal food, a local farmer-veteran telling their story, the film screening and a conversation with the audience. The energy in the room is electric! Grown men cry, rousing standing ovations ensue, and ideas are flying round the room.  It's [...]

Vertical Urban Farm in Chicago

2013-05-15T05:30:21+00:00

Archi's Acres (featured in "Ground Operations") has been teaching organic hydroponic gardening for several years already, training veterans in sustainable agriculture. But now it's finally taking off in the mainstream as well, as evidenced by this article about a large vertical farm in Chicago.  We need these in cities all over the country. Let's train vets to do the job! Read more: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2013/03/22/farmedhere-nations-largest-vertical-farm_n_2933739.html

Ground Operations: Battlefields to Farmfields screening at Edible Institute 2013!

2013-05-08T22:17:29+00:00

So excited!! Edible Communities represents 75 different magazines from around the U.S.  It started here with Edible Ojai and now it's everywhere... Edible Seattle, Edible East Bay, Edible Hawaii, you name it. I get to screen the film to all the food editors and publishers who are gathering here in Santa Barbara this weekend!  Naturally, we're giving them free copies to take home ... and hopefully to inspire their staff to write an article and plan a screening, so we can hook up veterans who are farming and ranching in their specific regions. This would be a fantastic way to connect communities with their local farmer-vets. [...]

Ground Operations wins an “Official Selection” Award – Best Solution from Cinema Verde

2013-05-01T00:22:00+00:00

Thanks to the enthusiastic support of the Cinema Verde Environmental Film festival, we have our first award laurel for the front of our DVD cover.  The festival covered subjects such as sustainable food, water, business and many special issues.  "Ground Operations" had a full house and a lively Q&A afterwards in great part because of the film's vet-farmer, Matthew Raiford.  Matthew gave the audience a much better idea of how PTSD shows up, the hyper-vigilence that seems a little like Spiderman's heightened senses.  We also had a chance to begin organizing a benefit "Farm-to-Table Dinner & a Movie" for his farm, next [...]
